Better late than never – here is the 2010 Big Slammers Schedule2010 CBA Schedule
Slammers back in action tonight trying to go 3-0 for the season! Lunken Field #1 – 6:20pm
The Slammers continued their winning ways with an easy victory over WHE 18-6 in a run-rule shortened game. Actually WHE has improved over the years. I can remember a few years ago when WHE had a digital scoreboard at one of their games. The Slammers always welcome technology and innovation – being on the web and now live streaming during our games.
Muzzo returned to the mound and posted his first victory of the year for the Slammers. The Slammers have three excellent pitchers this year, great offense and have been impressive on defense. While it may be too early to call the Slammers the favorite – we are definitely a contender.
The Slammers started off the 2010 season on the right foot with an easy 11-4 win over NKY. Congrats to Eric Foster for his first win as starting pitcher for the slammers.
We also had a live video feed of the game. What an awesome waste of bandwidth and technology!!
The 2010 season starts tonight with a yet unknown opponent. What is know is the following: Location – Oakley Field #1, Time: 6:20pm. As noted above, the Slammers have been moved to the Upper Division. Apparently after watching some exhibition games and reading about the vast improvements in the uniforms, many of the lower division opponents petitioned to force the Slammers be moved to the Upper Division. So it should turn out to be an interesting season. But don’t fret – Big Slammers has been promised a game against Midnight Oil to keep the spirit of the Rivalry in check.
Gentlemen,
As promised, a blue ribbon panel was recently convened to conduct a comprehensive study on the feasibility and design direction of new team uniforms. From the start, we knew last year’s efforts by Warner would be hard to top, and no mere t-shirt could ever again come close to the majesty and grace of Mr. Big Slammer set upon a background of eye catching pink. It was simply too perfect to attempt to recreate.
Instead, the Uniform Committee decided to explore alternative options. Rather than another t-shirt, or even a true baseball jersey, it was quickly decided that our team would look to softball’s much classier cousin from across the pond and don English style cricket jerseys for the upcoming season… because what says “class” more than playing sports with a collar on your shirt? (Professional bowling being the obvious exception) Thus, it is with great pleasure that I present the 2010 Big Slammers Test Match Jersey. Available only from the Big Slammers Clubhouse — “Official Outfitter of the 2010 Big Slammers Softball Club.”

The shirt retains the familiar and now well loved Mr. Big Slammer logo, while at the same time adding a bit of subtlety for those who thought that last year’s all pink motif was a little too fashion forward. In addition, for the first time ever, the uniform will be available in both Regular and Warner Slim Fit Models, to accommodate team members of all sizes.
Last year’s uniform will, of course, continue to be acceptable attire on game days, but if you are interested in the new classy uniform, all you need to do is click the link above and choose the model and size.
Cheerio!
Matt
New Season – New look – hope to have live game updates and maybe even streaming
**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE**
Slammers Take Opening Game Against Upper Division Foe, 22-21
Opening Day started off right, with wily Big Slammers veterans Arend and Judkins being assigned the task of providing the team’s most important resource: beer. Arend brought Tecate in honor of Cinco de Mayo and Judkins went with the classics — Hudy Delight, along with a couple of Budweiser Tall Boys, aka “Warner Fuel”. The team looked sharp in the debut of the new uniforms and the opposing upper division team, Ken Power’s All Stars, was visibly unnerved at the sight of such a fine looking bunch of players. Perhaps it was the color – a particularly attractive shade of pink. Maybe it was the imposing visage of Mr. Big Slammer staring disapprovingly back at them whenever they glanced in the direction of the Slammers’ bench. More likely, it was Burns’ choice to compliment the ensemble with red shorts, blue shoes, and an old school mesh Brewers cap. Whatever it was, KPAS was stunned.
Unfortunately, whatever advantage the new uniforms may have bestowed upon the team was quickly dispelled by the sight of the Slammer’s taking infield practice while awaiting the ump’s arrival. Suffice it to say that the off season rust was evident. The Slammers hadn’t had a game yet this season due to an unfortunate combination of rainouts and bye weeks, and in typical Slammers fashion, a full team mandatory spring training hadn’t occurred yet either. Not picking up a softball in nearly a year had not done great things for the well-oiled machine that was the Slammers’ defensive unit of last season. Errors and miscues abounded during warm-ups, lulling KPAS into a sense of complacency about the team they were about to face.
The first inning wasn’t much better for the Slammers, as Muzzo struggled with locating his pitches early on, allowing KPAS’ hitters to rope a few balls. A number of costly fielding and throwing errors didn’t help matters either. The Slammers, reacting to this adversity like the defending champions they are, minimized the damage to only 6 runs and responded in the bottom half of the inning with 3 of their own. From then on, Muzzo found his mid-season form and was lights out, consistently frustrating the KPAS batters with a steady diet of inside pitches that led to many popups and line outs. Fielding also improved markedly as the game went on. One KPAS batter, during his last at bat, was heard to remark under his breath, “come on, just let me get one hit today!” as yet another ball fell harmlessly into a Slammer glove.
In contrast to the fielding, the Slammers’ bats showed little rust. Powered by the off season purchase of a new bat, the team consistently put men on base, trading runs with their upper division opponent for the entire game and having only one inning where they were kept scoreless. Arnzen was named Chevy Player of the Game, putting on an offensive show with two home runs that seemed to roll forever in the outfield. KPAS must have read the scouting report on Warner, as the pitcher gave him nothing above his waist except for a single tantalizing pitch that was a little to far outside to chase. Deprived of his patented overhand tomahawk swing, Warner changed tactics and instead somehow turned a ground ball into the outfield into a homerun. Perhaps it was the added speed afforded him by the form fitting (and attractive) lightweight coach’s shorts he was wearing. Plans to convince, Judkins, already the Slammers’ fastest player, into trying a pair are reportedly in the works. Arend was the surprise of the game, going 3-3 and showing considerably more pop than last season, leading to speculation that he may be juicing and that his Giants cap may be hiding a swelling Bondsian head. Finally, the Slammers’ off-season acquisitions, free agent David Topmiller and rookies Blake Nickles and Brandon James all had solid games that now have Zimmerman toying with a possible shakeup of the lineup for next week’s game to take advantage of their skills.
The game ended in dramatic fashion that will only add to the Slammers’ already considerable lore. The Slammers, down 17-21 in the bottom of the seventh, overcame the four run deficit to win 22-21, sending the All Stars home with the shame of losing to a supposedly inferior lower division team and sending the Slammers to Arthur’s in celebration. As history has shown though, there is no shame in losing to the Slammers. Many have done it in the past and many more will do it in the future. Speaking of that, next week’s game is against the historically strong Freund Freeze & Arnold and preseason commitments will have the Slammers operating with a skeleton lineup. Abes scheduled to move from first to the mound for his traditional single start of the year and will attempt to maintain his perfect starting record in Muzzo’s absence. Coach Zimmerman is also expected to name an interim manager for the game in the next few days.
All in all, a strong start. The Slammers still have not lost a game on the field of play since the playoffs in 2007. Let’s hope the winning ways continue.
The Schedule for the 2009 campaign has been released. Vegas odds makers have made the Slammers the odds on favorite to repeat, although at least one bookmaker questioned the new logo and thought that it might deter from the potent offense.
